Grizzly Peak Trail:

Location:

This 35 minute drive starts south through town on Main Street/Siskiyou towards Southern Oregon University. Turn left on Ashland Street towards Interstate 5. Don”™t get on the Interstate! Go over it! The road sweeps to the right and you will hit an intersection for Dead Indian Road. Turn left on Dead Indian Road and head uphill into the mountains for about 10 minutes. Keep an eye to your left for the Forest Service sign saying Shale City Road and Grizzly Peak. That dirt road will hit 3 other dirt intersections so follow the Grizzly Peak signs. There are great signs, do not fear. Finally you will dead end into a 2 tiered dirt parking lot.

From Ashland head east on Hwy 66, about 1/4 mile east of Hwy 5, turn Left onto Dead Indian Memorial Road.

Continue on Dead Indian Memorial Road for about 6.4 miles.

Turn Left onto Shale City Road. From here the way to Grizzly Peak is marked. There are at least 2 forks in the road, just follow the signs.

Difficulty:  Easy to moderate

Length:  4.8 miles

Unique Qualities:  During late spring the wildflowers are in full bloom.  There are two official viewpoints: the Burn Viewpoint and the Ashland Viewpoint.  At the Burn Viewpoint, you can see what remains from the 2002 East Antelope Fire. At the Ashland Viewpoint, you”™ll get a spectacular view of the city, Mt. Ashland, Mt. Shasta and Pilot Rock
